Singing is a very personal form of self expression. Choosing the right voice teacher to fit your voice and your goals is important. Here is some information about me and my approach to teaching to help you get started.
All styles are welcome, including Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Country, and Musical Theater. I am a classically trained opera singer but I have a passion for a wide variety of styles and embrace extended techniques from yodeling to screaming to multi-phonics.
Voice lessons begin with a vocal warm up and technique work before moving into repertoire and performance coaching. Technical exercises tailored to your voice and progress are designed to help you grow efficiently and healthfully. You will be guided through the process of discovering and getting to know your own instrument - my job is to help you unleash your potential, trust in your own abilities, and to express yourself to the fullest without imitating other singers. Your voice is unique and special, let's get the most out of it! Along the way you will gain the tools to analyze and adjust your voice during your own practice and develop healthy and sustainable singing habits. My approach is to push you as much as you need and offer suggestions on repertoire and exercises, while remaining respectful of your goals. I want to help you explore and develop your own singing interests and abilities.
Every singer needs individualized instruction and, unfortunately, there is no easy formula to train a voice or fix vocal problems. Because there is no single pedagogical approach that covers all of the bases that will help someone become a well-rounded and polished singer, I use a variety of teaching styles. That said, my teaching is highly influenced by traditional Bel Canto practices, body alignment and somatic practices such as The Feldenkrais Method and The Alexander Technique, as well as the combination of several styles of teaching and singing that I have learned in my own study of the voice. I strongly believe it is important to understand and address the anatomy of the voice in its relationship with systems of the body that are essential to good singing: our whole body is our instrument, not just our larynx alone!

Meghann Welsh is a classically trained dramatic soprano and multi-instrumentalist with over ten years' experience teaching voice. As a performer, Ms. Welsh's creative work focuses on opera, contemporary and baroque chamber music, free improvisation, and pre-war American country and blues. Her academic work is inspired by her fascination with the amazing versatility of the human voice: from country yodeling to experimental multi-phonics, to the dramatic decibels of the opera diva, the voice offers plenty to study and explore. Ms. Welsh earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2002), her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from San Francisco State University (2009), and her Ph.D. in Music with an emphasis in Integrative Studies and Vocal Performance from the University of California, San Diego (expected 2015).
